Sir Ernest Shackleton was an Antarctic explorer who led multiple expiditions to the polar regions in the early 20th century. Shackleton is best known for captaining the ill-fated Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition, during which his ship, the Endurance, was crushed by pack ice, stranding them in Antarctica for three years. Nevertheless, Shackelton managed to rescue his entire 28-man crew with no loss of life by crossing uncharged glaciers and all sorts of nice heroic things like that.
